Marcus Carline

Is a Composer
I graduated from Cal State, Long Beach with a BM in Composition in 2015. I like to write for film and video games. I like to write art music, whether it’s high or low. I like to write for friends. I think it’s safe to say I like to write music in general. I’ve studied composition with Alan Shockley, Adriana Verdie and Carolyn Bremer. I’ve written works for ensembleFRET, Friction Quartet, LAPQ, and the VEDA Quartet.

Is an Arranger
It’s sort of like the composer thing, only I’m taking somebody else’s stuff and making it a little bit different. Hopefully better. In 2014, I received a Downbeat Student Music Award for Undergraduate Arrangement (for Car24, which you can listen to me and PST sing over in the Audio section).

Is a Singer
Only sort of like the previous two. Making mouth sounds that usually, but not always, form words. I received a separate BM in Jazz Studies at CSULB, having studied with Christine Guter and sung in her award winning ensemble, Pacific Standard Time. I’m also singing with Choral Arts Initiative, a new SoCal choir dedicated to performing new choral works, as well as with the a cappella group Westbeat.

Is a Person
Which includes the previous three things, but isn’t just those three things. I don’t actually have free time, but I steal free time for anime, comics on the internet, being the only American I know who likes Major League Soccer, and educational youtube. If you see me out and about, I’m probably drinking a tasty beer I’ve never heard of, or eating something tasty I have heard of. I have a hard time declining invitations for tasty anything.
